Kiss Papercuts Goodbye

An immersive book that reclaims the historical influence of Asian women and teens around the world who empowered themselves and others.

Target Audience: Middle grade to YA

Responsibilities: Copy edits, Layout revision, Digital illustration revision & generation

Tools Used: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Procreate

Overview

During the final phase before production, I was part of the creative team at Hello Prosper that collaborated to revise the layout, copy, and illustrations in Kiss Papercuts Goodbye

I utilized Adobe Indesign to address layout and copy revisions as well as Photoshop and Illustrator to rework and generate new illustrations and icons. Feedback was integral to the design process, with each page and image going through multiple iterations.

Endpaper Design

Using brand guidelines and thematic concepts I created the layout for the endpaper of Kiss Papercuts Goodbye. I started by creating a mood board of reference images to get a feel for the design. First I used Adobe Illustrator to modify existing illustrations to create a simpler silhouette. With the modified illustrations, I created a continuous, flowing pattern. â€‹

Communicating Without Words

Referencing the other illustrations created for Kiss Papercuts Goodbye, I created artwork with a consistent style for a learning module about communication. I utilized Adobe Illustrator to create each illustration and Adobe InDesign to incorporate the art into the module.

Design Simplification

With the food and gift-giving illustrations, I started out with a more realistic depiction of each of the prompts. As we put the artwork into the layout on InDesign, we quickly realized that there were too many textures and shapes competing with each other. I went back to Illustrator and simplified each image while also creating a bold outline to adhere with the style of icons throughout the book.

The Next Changemaker

I was tasked with designing "The Next Changemaker." The description of the illustration was a contemporary silhouette of a girl in the age range of the target audience. I pulled the posing from the other illustrations in the book and utilized the team as thought partners to bring the illustration to life. I created the silhouette and confetti using Adobe Illustrator.

Design Iteration

As a team, we communicated through each step of the design process to define who this girl might be and how it would translate into the illustration. Each iteration served as a step closer to the end product.
